How Kimberly-Clark Aligned 100 Leaders in Business Decision Making
With corporate change in the air, Kimberly-Clark needed to align executives around its strategy and accelerate shareholder value creation. The annual offsite presented the perfect opportunity. Working with BTS, Kimberly-Clark’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Strategy Officer guided the development of a financial and business decision making simulation that impelled senior leaders to experience and practice working with the levers to view the investor as a customer and act accordingly to drive total shareholder return (TSR).
A Financial Decision Making Simulation Drives Resource and Capital Allocation
Beginning with interviews of senior executives, BTS designed and developed, in 60 days, a customized dynamically competitive board simulation. The simulation was structured around Kimberly-Clark’s two main businesses and focused on the enterprise capabilities necessary for shareholder value creation.
Due to the senior level of the audience, the complexity of the desired learning objectives, and the time allotted for the experience, BTS crafted a high impact, hybrid solution leveraging a customized board simulation with the power of a competitively dynamic computer-based market model. The board simulation tools for business decision making and planning used by teams of participants to allocate resources and capital across different innovation opportunities, branding, go-to-market strategies, and developing-enterprise capabilities.

Power of Customized Board Simulation Combined with Dynamically Competitive Computer-Based Market Model
Participating executives were divided into teams of four or five people. Teams were grouped to compete against each other in four discrete markets comprised of five teams each. They then vied to generate the highest TSR over two simulated years in the life of the company.
After each simulation period, debriefs focused on drawing links between the decisions that teams made and the impact of those decisions on TSR.
The BTS simulation enabled all 100 top leaders to experience the company’s challenges and the drivers for its future success in one big room, creating remarkable enthusiasm and fully aligning leaders around the future direction of the company.
